Built in 1834 this beautiful townhouse is evocative of mid-19th-century NYC. Rooms are kitted out in gorgeous antiques, and include overstuffed couches, decorative mirrors and Frette bed and bath linens. An extensive 1994 revamp has given the old building all the modern amenities of the day, and include central air conditioning, Internet access and work desks as standard. Downstairs it’s definitely worth investigating the sumptuous five-course high tea experience at Lady Medl’s Tea Salon.

A luxurious hotel with a bit of a ‘new age ’ feel to it, The Muse is equally attractive to business travellers hitting midtown for the day or tourists exploring Broadway for the weekend. Decked out in California colours and chic furniture, the lobby is a bit moodier than the bright nouveau rooms. The lobby and other public areas are wi-fi equipped and there is a large conference room for up to 120 people as well as two smaller ones for meetings. The District restaurant, designed by David Rockwell, serves American Brasserie fare.
