Could the series of ostrich head trophies be the cause of so much commotion at this hangout for über-hip residents of the Plateau? Modern but dingy, it’s a low-key atmosphere. However, the cacophony of chatter often drowns out the minimalist techno or ambient beats. On Thursdays a live Jazz trio plays.

While it’s on the same street as Montreal’s Hard Rock Café, Brutopia is on the opposite end of the nightlife spectrum. This brewpub, with a noteworthy Indian Pale Ale, is popular among the university students who live downtown. There’s live music nightly, including an '[open] mike’ once a week.

The entrance to this club is decked out like a disco ball. Downstairs, everyone boogies to remixes of their favourite disco era anthems. A former cabaret, much of the original décor remains but all anyone ever remembers is the raised dance floor – just like the one in Saturday Night Fever.

Raucous action in a retro setting, Go Go Lounge is groovy on most nights. With their martini menus on vinyl records, orange lighting throughout, the bar’s décor seems to be straight out of an Austin Powers flick. Standing in is a clientele too young to remember London during the 1960s.

Despite its seedy location, this pub has a gorgeous and secluded back terrace, which, on a hot summer evening, provides the ideal escape from the hordes at the nearby festival sites. On Mondays, pints of local draught beer are only $3.
