Houston / Nightlife / Lounge

Mint julep? Rob Roy? Sloe gin fizz? It seems unlikely that the cigar-chewing cotton brokers who inhabited this gorgeous space in 1883 drank swank cocktails – it’s also like that the 'absinthe’ on the modern menu is something else, something legal. But why quibble with a swell fantasy, especially when the dream has such a swank setting.

Also known as Muldoon’s but always known for the blending the sophistication of leather banquettes with the joie de vivre of a malt shop. Patrons are young, not childish.

Some complain that this effort to relive the halcyon days of Houston’s old guard is merely a lush landscape for today’s ambitious trendoids – failing to recognise that back in the day, the Houstonians who would go on to be movers and shakers were ambitious trendoids.

What might be Houston’s highest ceiling ensures that you won’t feel claustrophobic here, even on a packed weekend night. Skilled bartenders dispense excellent advice on wine and mix proper cocktails. Some weekends see live music or special events – distractions easily avoided by slipping into the back room or upstairs loft.
