These accommodations recently made the change from Hawthorn Inn to Comfort Inn in a transition affecting little more than the marquee. Solid, simple service is still the benchmark and what the hotel lacks in bedtime mints and fluffy bathrobes it more than makes up for with ample free parking and clean, comfortable rooms for cheap. High-speed internet access is available in most rooms. All guest enjoy a complete (ie, more than coffee and muffins) breakfast, gratis, and many rooms include microwaves and mini-fridges.

This unfussy hotel is adjacent to the peaceful Sam Houston Park and has direct tunnel access – your key to getting anywhere downtown in any weather. Guests who stay here for a romantic getaway imagine that the hotel is devoted to fresh flowers, music, and other Valentine touches while business travellers believe the hotel’s efficient attention to conference and corporate needs mean the staff is dedicated to supporting enterprise. Both may have a point. Whether you need hot breakfast delivered in 15 minutes or less or a carriage ride, the Doubletree will make it happen.

Everything here is straightforward and efficient, except the complimentary breakfast. The staff serves up a spread fit for a lumberjack with waffles, sausages, home cooking favourites such as biscuits and gravy. Nearby chain restaurants can handle lunch and dinner. Golf and other recreation are also nearby. Those with no time to play can work, efficiently, at executive desks with ergonomic chairs and complimentary high-speed internet access. Rooms lack fax machines and Fed-Ex packages, but the desk offers adequate office services.

Staying at this full-service high-rise hotel in the suburbs is hardly roughing it. Guests can have three soaking/swimming choices – an indoor and outdoor pool and a whirlpool. Why work when secretarial services can be hired? If you must, all rooms have executive desks with ergonomic chairs and high-speed internet access. Holiday Inn shuttles provide free trips within five miles of the hotel – an area with several shopping centres and a dozen restaurants – and the desk clerks can tell you what cab fare will run for trips to other areas.

As a blessing for those travelling with children or in-laws, the hotel provides at least two televisions in each suite and video games. Other features – such as the full-floor business centre – cater to the networking, fax, and phone needs of the working stiff. Though not exactly an attractive hotel, and plopped down at the intersection of two especially ugly freeways, this tower is an excellent deal. Inside, the bland box building offers a lovely experience and this Sheraton is convenient to the Galleria, downtown, and Montrose.
