Everything a luxury hotel should be – simple, understated elegance and flawless service have long been hallmarks of this high-rise hotel on the ugly side of downtown. Why worry about the scenery when the rooftop pool provides excellent view of… other things. Indoor shopping is across the street at the Park Shops indoor mall and the Four Seasons’ car service ferries guest to downtown destinations. Quality extends to the 16,522-square foot meeting space. Make a point of dropping by the Lobby Lounge to see who else might be dropping by. Celebrities, power brokers, and other very attractive people are often part of the laid back crowd.

The trustworthy institution is wrapping up an overhaul that will end with internet access in all guest rooms. Professional nesters hired by the Hyatt have already upgraded the rooms with fluffy comforters, lux sheets, and other touches that would please your gran – all designed to help the weary worker forget the day and get a great night’s sleep. The rotating restaurant atop the hotel, Spindletop, is still spinning and Metro’s free downtown trolley makes it easy to reach the new eateries at the other end of downtown.

Up-to-date technology and 22 meeting rooms provide workday facilities beyond what most business trips require. After hours? Greenway Plaza, the office park attached to this hotel, has a mini-mall in the basement. Excepting a sports bar and the Greenway Three movie theatre, this shopping centre is largely deserted after five. If you’d rather not watch foreign films, there’s a multiplex within walking distance and a wealth of Galleria and Montrose nightspots nearby. Note that, unlike many Houston hotels, this nine-storey business hotel charges for parking.

This institution provides charming, comfortably elegant rooms within walking distance of three museums, Herman Park and the zoo – and evening entertainment from the MFA film program. This scenic location and the hotel’s award-winning pastry chef Glenna Artripe make the hotel perfect for Sunday brunch followed by an afternoon of art. Or stay in and enjoy view of Herman Park and the downtown skyline. Various managers have made changes here and there in the hotel’s nearly 80 years – subtle updates that only enhance this landmark’s charm. Note that scenic public spaces, such as the neighbourhoods around this hotel, are rare in Houston.
