Cowboy duds Your first choice in downtown Dallas for that yee-haw experience. Live music seven nights a week in the place where Willie Nelson might hang out when he comes to town. Wear your pointy-toed boots, 10- gallon hat, and bring that don’t-mess-with- Texas attitude.

Don’t let the stadium seating fool you. This is no Mega-Giganto Plex American film behemoth. It has eight screens for films – some big studio, some not – that make you think while gulping down that bucket of Coke. However, what’s really cool is the food served at the adjacent Ajelika Café, including the likes of risotto cakes or Portobello mushrooms, which you can bring with you into the theatre.

You’ll either be appalled or enthralled by the notion of a bar that pays tribute to all of the white trash trailer-park clichés known to man. Resplendent in its tackiness, Double Wide, features fake wood panelling and macramé – and serves up plenty of cheap brands of American beer. In cans, of course.

A favourite for those looking for films that do not aim for the common denominator, in a funky part of town where you can find a few cool restaurants and bars nearby. Three screens showing art and foreign film fare.

This is your real big-screen test, watching a 79-by-60 foot screen showing panoramic nature films or invigorating theatrical presentations such as Stomp! in a theatre setting so real you might want to join in the dance or believe you can sniff the air of the rainforest you are investigating. Some films can make patrons dizzy, so just look away for a few seconds if that parachute jump scene is too much to bear.
