Dallas / Accommodation / Good Value

Built in 1924, the Stoneleigh is a favourite spot for those looking for a less corporate overnight experience. The European-style hotel boasts guest rooms with chintz and over-stuffed chairs, windows that open, great shopping and restaurants within\nstrolling distance (including one of the city’s best sushi joints on the hotel’s first floor and an unaffiliated burger joint called The Stoneleigh Pea across the street). The hotel’s signature restaurant is Restaurant 1923, and the Lion’s Den, the hotel's dimly lit, clubby bar, hosts guests ranging from local business people to clandestine couples.

Towering elegance soaring 21 storeys over the Galleria mall in a prime north Dallas location. Amenities here are king: check out the Executive Club floor, with bigger rooms, more mod cons and every conceivable business aid. An outdoor pool, jogging track and a newly built gym provides a break from the workday. Dining is not the strongest suit – best to go out – but the main bar is fun later on when a good, mixed crowd gets in. Best of all, though, is the proximity to Galleria, with its 200-plus shops and bars, ice-rink and cinemas. There’s also a fitness centre nearby.

Located at the key intersection of North Central Expressway and LBJ Freeway, the former Sheraton Park Central, with its magnificent rooftop dining room, is a prime spot for business travellers who don’t want to fight their way from downtown. Service and location overcome a bland exterior. Large, comfortable rooms with fax and computer outlets make this an excellent place to work. Proximity to prime shopping and some of Dallas’ best districts make it smart for non-working visitors as well. The main dining room, Laurels, is supplemented by the Café in the Park in the three-storey atrium and McNelly’s Park pub. Complimentary Starbucks coffee in every room.
