Resembling a giant barn, Harper’s Ferry draws an appropriately wild crowd of college-age party animals. Because of its size, the venue attracts many national, if not yet explosively popular acts, and charges low covers.

Well-trod stomping grounds for scores of local bands, the raucous, two-floor Middle East is a must-visit for anyone looking to sample the local musical flavour. Inside its restaurant, the flavours are all vegetarian with excellent, if basic offerings such as hummus and tabouli.

Despite its obscure location inside the Double Tree, the hottest jazz acts in the country manage to find the understated Scullers when they come to town. Widely regarded as the best place to hear jazz in Boston thanks to its acoustics and talent roster, Scullers can also be one of the priciest, with tickets for acclaimed acts costing upwards of $50.
