Kuwait City / Dining

This Lebanese eaterie seems to get it right every time. Cold and hot mezze are equally tasty and the fried kebbeh and salads are expertly done. Meats are cooked well, if a little fatty, and the fruit juices are quite amazing.

Al Boom is to be found in a large wooden merchant dhow (boat) anchored next to the SAS hotel. An attentive crew serve prime steaks, grilled foods, chicken specialities, lobster, shrimps and local fish. The salad bar and the appetiser buffet are rich and varied. The bread is baked in traditional clay ovens.

A central courtyard of old houses behind the Catholic church is slowly being colonised by restaurants. The new Beit7 retains many original features, including a large tree growing through the middle. Mediterranean and Pacific Rim fuse to good effect and the mocktails (nonalcoholic cocktails) are worth tasting. There are two private rooms upstairs seating six and 12 people.

Conveniently located in the restaurant complex adjacent to the Marina Mall, the Blue Fig is one of the latest and trendiest fusion cuisine outlets. Dark and sultry ambience with a mellow live band (yes, a live band... times are a changing in Kuwait). The concept is simple: any dish you choose is served on a thin pizzalike crust. Servings aren’t generous, so the Blue Fig may be an ideal place for a light evening nibble, but the food is flavoursome.

Kuwaitis and expatriates alike are drawn to this upmarket American burger bar overlooking the sea, complete with a plethora of video screens and recorded music. Fuddruckers prides itself on providing the best hamburgers in the world, so judge for yourself as you help yourself to a variety of burger trimmings. Also on the menu are fish sandwiches. For dessert, visit a separate counter piled with scrumptious cookies and brownies.

It may look like a ’40s throwback, but this has to be one of the most consistently good chains of burger bars in the world.

A loyal following confirms this to be the freshest and most consistent sushi in the country. Kei is authentic Japanes, the service is friendly and comfortable seats add to a good overall experience.

This small, hidden restaurant serves arguably the best Indian food in town. It has some Chinese as well, but even that tastes like Indian. The place has been around since 1974, as the furniture and decor will testify. Start with the hot and sour soup, then move on to a tandoori chicken (extra spicy if you can handle it) with some delectable daal. If you can overlook the shabby atmosphere for the greater purpose of giving your taste buds a real treat, go for it.

A spectacular view of the bay awaits from the grand height of 82 metres. Food is mostly international, with some mezze to start with. Main dishes include smoked salmon, seafood and beef. The restaurant is frequently booked for official delegations. A more informal alternative with an equally good view is the café on the same floor.

La Piazza prides itself on being Italian, or at least more Italian than other restaurants providing the same cuisine. The interior is like that of a trattoria and certainly feels like an effort has been made. Particular attention has been paid to the basket of warm bread.

Choose from the top-notch French cuisine in an intimate atmosphere upstairs or Californian and nouvelle cuisines in the downstairs bistro. Though renowned for its scrumptious desserts, Le Nôtre is probably best liked for its excellent salad bar. The outside terrace is popular when the weather is right. The weekend brunch, particularly the traditional Arabic breakfast, is worth a try.

One of the oldest Middle Eastern restaurants in the country, it’s nestled against the wall of Dasman Palace with views of the sea and Kuwait Towers. The mezze dishes are generous and authentically Lebanese. Water pipes (shishas) can be taken on the upstairs open terrace. Service is very quick. Closed on Saturdays.

A master head chef cooks up favourites from different parts of India. These restaurants are a favourite among Indian and other expats as well as visitors to the city who come back repeatedly.

Kuwait’s only warehouse-style eatery on the Gulf Road is a very popular place with both the local and expat yuppie set. Great Italian food and scrumptious desserts served in a trendy atmosphere. The outdoor terrace, with views of the Arabian Gulf, is open during spring and autumn. It also features the best, though possibly the loudest, music in town (recorded, as live music is generally prohibited).

Expats always take their visitors here for Lebanese food in a soothing setting of palm trees and a waterfall. If you’re unsure what to choose, ask the waiters to put together a combination mezze platter. Main courses are generally grilled meat, fish or poultry. Bread is cooked in the Iranian ovens in the garden. Shishas are also served.

Good-value food and cheerful service with a wide range of pizza and pasta dishes. Everything comes with bread and the tasty house grissini. The carpaccio is highly recommended and pizza bases are of the proper, thin Italian type.

One of the longest standing fine-dining restaurants in Kuwait, offering classical Italian cuisine with a modern touch. Elegant and consistent, with impeccable service. It’s advisable to make reservations.

The Sakura (it means cherry blossom) is a typical Japanese restaurant with three tatami rooms and a bigger sushi bar. It’s entertaining to watch the food being prepared at the teppanyaki counters, or you can opt for a more mellow, less intrusive evening by sitting at the sushi bar.

Excellent Iranian bread is followed by a wide selection of the usual starters and a generous complimentary bowl of fresh greens and spicy cheeses. Main courses centre on traditional Persian lamb dishes and meat stews. The mutton and rice is good, as is the baked fish. Service is slow, yet friendly. Closed on Saturdays.

Possibly one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Middle East, the Peacock offers authentic specialities from Shanghai, Canton, Szechuan and Peking. The richly decorated dining room is comfortable and the service is professional and friendly. The steamed shrimp dumplings are recommended.
