Damascus / Dining / European

Friendly staff, good-value easy-going European-style food, big screen football for sports fans, a wealthy clientele, a shiny motorbike parked at the entrance and an incomprehensible array of different art prints, poster portraits and little treasures hanging off the walls combine to give Algora the feel of somewhere between a sports bar and a members-only club. Open 24 hours a day. Alcohol served.

Pasta is the order of the day here and it’s good. So is the view, as you look out from a beautiful terrace onto the parade of evening strollers and late-night shoppers making their way through Shaalan’s shopping district. Minestrone soup or carpaccio with lemon are favourites. All in all a very cosmopolitan feel. Alcohol served.

A perfect place for a lunchtime break, it’s always busy with a lively young crowd dressed to impress. Crepes and a touch of claustrophobia are the order of the day here. The pasta is particularly good, surprisingly quick to arrive and satisfyingly filling. Good spot for a casual meeting with someone who doesn’t know Damascus as the café is located just up the street from the easy-to-spot landmark of the Cham Hotel. No alcohol.

A long time hip hang-out for the young and becoming, in Gemini its all about looking good, smiling sweetly and trying to hold it all in while tucking into American-sized portions of steak fillets drizzled in Swiss cheese and mushrooms. Salads are a very decent alternative if the meat feasts get too much, with a whole corner of the restaurant is given over to wonderland of beetroot, couscous, green beans and beefsteak tomatoes. Booking advised. Alcohol served.

Finding top-rate Italian cooking can be a challenge in Damascus, but La Fontana is an exception. Making up for a rather inauspicious location overlooking the Mezze highway, the restaurant serves excellent pasta dishes, including all the favourite funghis, parmiggianas and a rather tangy pollo alla brace. Service is efficient and unobtrusive and, yes, there’s ham on the menu. Alcohol served.
