Damascus / Accommodation / Business

This hotel is located in quiet surroundings, with a beautiful view overlooking the scenery of Damascus. The rooms are modern, well equipped and rather charmless, a bit like the building itself which has a glass facade and rather tacky interior. The hotel’s location in the western suburb of Mezze isn’t ideal for those spending time in the city centre, but it will work for people with business at one of the many embassies in the area. The business centre is open 24 hours a day and provides all the usual services. There are three conference halls with a capacity of 600.

The phrase ‘does exactly what it says on the tin’ springs to mind for the Meridien—a no nonsense hotel with excellent facilities, efficient service and rooms that meet all the requirements of an international traveller. The only problem is it’s got about as much soul as a filing cabinet. Much used by Washington delegations, business forums, marketing managers and media types, but conveniently located only for the rank of taxis waiting outside. Fine for those who want to keep contact with local culture to a minimum. Has five conference rooms with 1,000-person capacity.

With a very central location, the Semiramis is always easy to find by the big purple sign on its roof. But the best view you’re likely to get from your room is of the flyover at Victoria Bridge. Two swimming pools, one indoor, one outdoor, a reasonable Chinese restaurant and a lively nightclub make up for comfortable but rather dull rooms. Evening entertainment includes oriental music, belly dancing and a host of Syrian singers. There are also good exercise facilities, with a fully equipped gym, sauna and massage. Two conference Halls can seat up to 600.

The Plaza is not a good-looking place and its appeal to the business traveller is limited, though it does have a new business centre offering a full range of facilities. Watch out for the pink neon sign outside, which bodes of things to come. It’s only really good if location matters more than anything, as it is dead in the centre of downtown. Dining is no delight and most guests head to the Damascus Workers Club around the corner. Has one conference hall for 150 persons. Not much for your money at this place.
