Tucked in an alley near chaotic Midan Tahrir, After Eight hosts a regular line-up of jazz, blues and Egyptian bands. Try to catch the excellent Wust Al Balad. Between acts, the DJ plays the latest imports. The minimum charge is £3.60. A choice place for a fun night with friends.

Brass fixtures and oak woodwork combine to create a relaxed atmosphere, reinforced by the presence of a dart board. The entrance is discreet, the door staff imposing, but the clientele is not at all exclusive. The regular karaoke nights (Wednesdays 10pm) attract an enthusiastic mix of Egyptians and foreigners.

Jazz and blues bands share the space with electronic groups and the occasional soft-rock cover band. It’s smoky, dark and cramped, but drinks are reasonably priced and the club attracts a fun mix of people. There is a £2.70 minimum charge.

Deals’ clientele is a little younger and rowdier than Pub 28’s. Cramped and loud, but always jovial. The surprisingly good food includes salads and lighter fare. A good place to watch the football match and make a few new friends, Deal’s can fill up quickly on Thursday and Friday nights.

Koreana’s young and lively atmosphere makes it one of Maadi’s most popular bars. Play some pool and mingle with a mix of expats and Egyptians.
