A fun, relaxed environment for an evening of eating, talking, sipping and smoking, Cuba Cabana is half indoors and half outdoors. The shisha here is some of the best in town—the tobacco is placed inside a hollowed-out apple, giving it a fruity flavour. International favourites like fajitas, burgers and steaks feature on the menu. Spend a hot summer’s night enjoying cool (non-alcoholic) cocktails and juices in the outdoor jungle garden.

Cairo can be tough on vegetarians, who quickly get tired of fuul and taamiyya. At its best, L’Aubergine offers fresh, homestyle cooking with dishes ranging from Mediterranean to re-interpretations of Tex-Mex favourites like three-bean fajitas. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been at its best for quite some time. Service is lax and the food is mediocre. Upstairs is a popular, often crowded, bar where you can get big weekend breakfasts.

The elegance and comfort of La Bodega makes the hustle of Cairo’s noisy streets seem a world away. A stylish restaurant, bar and cocktail lounge, it’s popular with Cairo’s city slickers. The restaurant offers surprisingly delicate Pacific fusion cooking, including excellent shrimp, while the lounge menu revolves around well-prepared and impeccably fresh Mediterranean food. The adjoining bar offers its own cigar humidor and one of the city’s best selections of spirits. A good place for a gin and tonic on a lazy Saturday evening.

La Tour d’Or offers one of the city’s most elegant dining experiences. Located on the 41st floor of the lavish Grand Hyatt, the entire restaurant revolves 360 degrees every 75 minutes, giving diners panoramic views of the Pyramids, the Nile and Cairo’s far-reaching cityscape. Sink deep into the comfortable chairs, order from the extensive wine list and sit back and enjoy the impeccably prepared renditions of international classics. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Service is professional and attentive and the atmosphere discreetly luxurious.

Shaded by large umbrellas and larger trees, the garden of the Marriott Hotel is one of the more pleasant places in the city. Early rising patrons can enjoy Egyptian, American or continental breakfasts including excellent eggs Benedict. For everyone else the menu has steaks, sandwiches, Egyptian snacks and excellent juices. Service can be lackadaisical, but it remains a favourite place to sip cold drinks and watch the great and good of Cairo.
