Zagreb / Nightlife

Aquarius attracts some of the best international live acts and DJs to its rather lovely modern spaces. The music policy is less commercial than at other clubs.

Very central, very busy and rather expensive, Bulldog XL (the original Bulldog next door has closed down for the time being) is a popular hang-out for local celebrities and expats. A highlight is the temperature-controlled wine cellar with an excellent selection available by the glass.

An aptly named, über-stylish café that sits on the trendy café strip popularly known as Cvijetni trg, or Flower Square, after the number of vendors of such articles. The monochrome design is lightened with Georgia O’Keefe-style motifs. Luxurious sandwiches and snacks are available, but they’re pretty pricey.

A good place to meet local business folk at the after work parties on Thursdays. Tuesdays is alternative multimedia night, and on other nights commercial dance reigns. Gjuro shuts up shop in summer and decamps to [open]-air bar Papaya, by the swimming pool at Schlosserove stube 2.

One of the original fancy bars in Zagreb— now in a new location by the Croatian National Theatre—is a cool drinking spot, while the opulent old villa at Tuskanac 1, [open] at weekends only, is more of a nightclub, complete with a terrifyingly young crowd, terrifyingly well dressed.
