Zagreb / Dining / Seafood

Nestled in woodland dotted with grand villas, it’s hard to believe you’re 10 minutes’ walk from the main square. You’ll find wealthy locals celebrating special occasions and wowing their business clients here. Dubravkin put has for years been considered one of the best seafood restaurants in Zagreb, and now that it has been redecorated and reopened under new ownership, it’s better than ever. A national restaurant guide ranked it within the top 20 nationwide in 2005. No mean feat, considering there’s so much competition with the sea so close by.

A family-run restaurant, the ace up Jadera’s sleeve is home-style cooking from the coastal regions of Dalmatia. Fish is ultra-fresh and superbly prepared, and prices are rather lower than in most seafood restaurants. There’s also a good selection of excellent risottos, pasta, gnocchi and Dalmatian meat specialities. Book in advance—it’s popular. Just behind Savska cesta, handy for the business districts south of the centre.

On the white pebble beach at Jarun Lake which, in high summer when it’s lively with bathers, is called Zagreb’s sea. The large windows look directly over the water and, appropriately enough, the menu’s focus is firmly on fish. Food is high quality, flavours perfectly balanced and staff are as stylish as the furnishings and significantly more amiable. After your meal, you can stroll around and sample the cafés, bars and nightclubs that necklace the lake, one of Zagreb’s main centres of nightlife.

A long-standing and reliable Zagreb tradition, this classy yet unpretentious restaurant in the basement of a lovely old building in the city centre is a delightful spot to sample Croatian seafood specialities at sensible prices. Traditional Dalmatian recipes include black squid ink risotto—a popular speciality—and the baked octopus is an excellent choice. Well-balanced flavours and courteous and attentive service.
