A classy Chinese, Asia has long been a respected restaurant and has an excellent location in a fine period building overlooking the Tomislav Square park. The interior is intimate and restrained, suitable for entertaining business clients. The staff are delightful and the cooking truly excellent.

A delightful example of an Indian by anyone’s standards. Maharadza is a relaxing hideaway, made cosy with ornate wall-hangings. The cuisine is definitely modified for sensitive local palates—your best bet is probably the tandoori chicken. A good spot for a meal before a night spent exploring the numerous bars on picturesque Tkalciceva street.

We were won over by the pleasing decor, cleanliness and quick, polite service of this place on the ground floor of a modern office building (opened in summer 2005). Chinese standards are fresh and nongreasy compared with some competitors, and this is one of three restaurants in Zagreb which now serve sushi. The location outside of the centre is good for parking and you’re close to Hotel Slisko and the southern commercial districts. This would make an ideal spot for solo dining also.

This subterranean den is suitably dark and decorated in an extravagantly stylish manner. The head chef competently handles Indonesian, Japanese, Malaysian and Thai specialities, although the lack of spicing is disappointing—either the result of an attempt to cater for local tastes or a lack of ingredients available locally. The adjoining bar is a lively spot serving excellent cocktails and although the music and the atmosphere are great it’s more a place for sitting comfortably and talking with friends than letting go and dancing or meeting new people.

In a country where most people’s conception of the culinary art is firmly national, the fact that Takenoko has endured is a testament to the quality of the kitchen. The sushi is masterful, there’s an imaginative selection of other Japanese dishes, and the desserts—such as profiteroles and green tea ice cream—are worth leaving space for. Takenoko is stylish, comfortable and has a lively atmosphere with relaxed dance music in the background.
