South of the river, close to a junction between the motorway bypass and one of the main roads into the city, Hotel I is close to the Zagreb Fair exhibition grounds and handy for the southern part of town. There’s plenty of green space around: the grounds are attractively planted and you can use the hotel’s tennis or golf facilities or visit the golf club nearby. A newly renovated 60s construction, all rooms have brand-new furnishings and internet connections, most are air conditioned and some have balconies. Hotel I has meeting rooms for up to 50 with audio-visual facilities. A solid budget option.

A five-minute walk from the main square, close to the financial district and on one of Zagreb’s main shopping streets, the Jadran is a pleasant older hotel with its own car park. Renovated in 2003, the quality of the furnishings, particularly the communal areas, is excellent given the price and the location. Noise shouldn’t be a problem as all rooms are air-conditioned and those overlooking the street have PVC double glazing. Rooms are a little on the small side and the fact that none are reserved for non-smokers may bother some.

A great deal of effort is being expended to bring the communal areas and one wing of this formerly neglected Sovietera hotel up to standard. This means that for small hotel prices you can take advantage of facilities normally found only in larger edifices. The spacious lobby is equipped with good-quality furnishings and rooms are decent if a little small. All are air conditioned and have internet connections. The neighbourhood is slightly drab, but it’s convenient for the centre and the business districts west and south of the main square. The restaurant area can be partitioned for meetings.

The unprepossessing exterior belies a spacious hotel that offers excellent value. The main coach station is very close, as are trams which take you into town or to the southern business districts within a few minutes, while the new business districts are on nearby Radnicka and Vukovarska streets. The owner, who lives on site, makes every effort to ensure you’ll want to come back. Rooms have a solid feel, are larger than in many hotels in this class, and beds are very comfortable. The film star is the huge penthouse apartment, beautifully decorated in a contemporary style and with an enormous terrace.

Just a few steps from the main square on one of Zagreb’s busiest shopping streets, this little pension is in a pleasant old building tucked in a quiet garden courtyard beneath the Upper Town. The attached restaurant specialises in game— you can try bear prosciutto and roast venison. Rooms are simple and feel a little on the cheap side—although the carpets are new and clean, they’re rather thin and not exactly Elle Deco. Basic equipment is either in the rooms or available to borrow, and the staff seem keen to please. A good option if you want to be in the centre and aren’t too worried about frills.
