Zagreb / Accommodation / Business

Reopening the Astoria in Spring 2005, the new owners have done a great job with what was a rather dilapidated affair. Fittings are of the highest quality and the new Astoria oozes comfort and refinement. All rooms have internet connections and minibars, and HBO pay-TV channels are free. The location is excellent for the central business district as well as sightseeing, and the hotel’s conference rooms have full audio-visual backup and can accommodate 100. The Astoria’s restaurant serves excellent Mediterranean cuisine. Parking is in the car park next door and costs 110 Kn per day.

Situated just west of the city centre, the proximity of Dom Sportova, which hosts some of Zagreb’s large sporting events and concerts, made this shiny blue glass tower block a favourite with visiting athletes. Nowadays, the up-and-coming nature of the neighbourhood has given the hotel a new clientele of younger professionals. The building’s Soviet era vintage is almost inescapable, but the interiors are as well executed as you would expect from the Sheraton stable. Of the eight meeting rooms, the largest can seat up to 400, and a total of 2,000 conference guests can be catered for. Restaurant estine is known for excellent cuisine—Croatian, international and healthy food—and its summer terrace.

It’s hard to beat Hotel Dubrovnik’s location, overlooking the perpetual motion of passers-by on Zagreb’s imposing main square and the crowds in the surrounding pavement cafés. Fully air-conditioned and double-glazed, city centre noise is unlikely to be a problem, and rooms facing the courtyard are completely quiet. One of Zagreb’s first high-class hotels, although some newcomers perhaps outshine it, it remains a reliable player on the scene. The hotel’s restaurant and coffee house are favoured spots for an informal meeting, and conference facilities can seat up to 200. Reserve parking in advance—a charge is payable.

If you’re driving, this is one of the best stays for your money. Many of the beautifully furnished rooms have massage tubs and showers. In fact, the comfort levels and attention to detail could lead you to fear that your bill will be three times its actual size. The hotel’s restaurant and catering are of impressive quality. A wine-tasting room can be used for intimate business gatherings and conferences for up to 200 can be accommodated. Sesvete is ideal for businesses located in the eastern and southern parts of Zagreb and is also convenient for the airport. A super little gym and sauna are free of charge for guests.

The Sheraton was the first new hotel to be built while the rumbles of war were still disturbing the peace of the Zagreb rooftops, so it was equipped with bulletproof glass, a measure that still attracts guests of a strategic nature. Wildly popular with the jet set when it opened, the Sheraton is still one of Zagreb’s most comfortable and popular hotels. Carlos Santana was so impressed by his Presidential Suite that he declared it one of the best hotels he’s ever stayed in. For events, the lovely Grand Ballroom can seat up to 800, and the smaller meeting rooms are excellent.
