Vienna’s most famous venue, also simply known as the Oper, has featured in many films set in Vienna. It looks particularly stunning in the snow. If you don’t manage to get to a performance here (you’ll need to book in advance or ask your concierge for tickets), at least try to take a daytime guided tour if you have a few hours off work.

Another great opera house, but less expensive and exclusive than the Staatsoper. The word Volksoper means the ‘people’s opera’ house. Standing tickets are often available and any remaining tickets are often sold cheaply in the last 30 minutes before the performance starts. Many of the productions have subtitles in English, but check the website to find out which ones.
