A good value, cosy restaurant serving imaginative food. Greek cuisine is very popular in Vienna and with places like this, it’s easy to see why. Achilleus is open daily 5.30-midnight, and on Saturdays and Sundays it’s also open for lunch (11.30am- 3pm). A good place for an intimate dinner, be it with colleagues or a partner. The Austrian-style décor may confuse you, but the food is most definitely Greek, made with fresh ingredients and cooked inventively.

This family-run restaurant is one of the only Heurigers in the city centre. Take your seat for a truly Austrian experience, including traditional food, local wines and live music. Outdoor seating available in the summer, when it can get very crowded with tourists. Open seven days a week until 11.15pm, and on Saturday nights until 1am.

Another famous coffee house and once an important meeting place for Vienna’s intellectuals. The high arched ceilings, elitist marble pillars and splendour of the chandeliers seem anomalous when one discovers that one of Central’s most famous regulars was Leon Trotsky, who came here to play chess. In the afternoons, music students and professionals perform classical music to accompany the patrons’ Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake). A great place for breakfast, served daily from 8am, as well as lunch and dinner.

One of Vienna’s most famous coffee houses. The elegance of Landtmann has attracted generations of visitors since it was opened in 1873. Among the famous [name]s who’ve sipped their melange or hot chocolate here are Sigmund Freud, Paul McCartney and Marlene Dietrich. Main courses are mostly traditional Viennese cuisine, though some concessions toward non-meat eaters are made. However, vegetarians will probably be more than happy with the amazing array of cakes on offer! On Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings, your meal will be accompanied by piano music. Like most cafes in Vienna this is a good spot for solo diners to come without fear of feeling uncomfortable.

The city’s oldest restaurant, this one has been around since 1447. Very central and just a short walk from Schwedenplatz. The food is very traditional Viennese fare, so not the best place to take a vegetarian colleague. In summer, sit in the garden.
