A great building housing a young, vibrant hotel—with often haughty staff—which will appeal to the discerning lower-budget traveller. Fax facilities are available at reception, but internet access is only available in the breakfast room (which doubles as a business room during the day), which may be a drawback. The bar is open 24 hours. Bus services from outside the hotel travel to the 1st and 7th Districts.

An impossibly cool hotel in a district that’s in the process of regeneration. The architecture is redolent of an elegant 1930s cruise liner, with porthole-like windows and smooth, clean lines. Gaze up in awe at the extent of the stunning spiral staircase. The 4th District remains shabby in a way that only ultra-cool up-andcoming areas can. It’s a short walk or tram ride to the Oper and Kärntner Strasse, and very close to the beautiful baroque Karlskirche. Be warned that the park around Karlskirche can be intimidating after dark, home to a community of junkies and beggars.

A great boutique hotel in a recently restored 19th century building. Check out the original artwork. Ideally situated near to Mariahilferstrasse and the Museumsquartier. There are fax facilities at reception plus free internet access in every room. A sauna, solarium and a steam bath are also available. Perfect for those on a smaller budget who still want luxury.

An exquisite hotel with only nine rooms, which makes for an intimate atmosphere, added to by the presence of a small but well stocked library. It’s aimed at business travellers, but check all your requirements are catered for before booking. It’s also relatively inexpensive, making it a good find for those on a smaller budget who need to impress. Situated in the 1st District, Hollmann Beletage is just a few minutes walk from Stephansplatz and a 15-minute walk to the Oper. Reception is only manned 9am-5pm, which could be a problem if you want to send or receive faxes outside this time.

In the heart of Vienna, just a stone’s throw from the Opera House, this is Vienna at its grandest (which doesn’t come cheap). Fall in love with the art nouveau furnishings, superb city views and Michelin-starred restaurant. Most rooms don’t contain fax machines or internet access (although these are available at the hotel’s business centre). Perfect for those who prefer to unwind at the end of the day, rather than carry on working. Meeting rooms are available for hire and the hotel can provide secretarial assistance.

A four-star hotel with rooms dedicated to 33 Austrian wine growers, it demonstrates wonderful use of space with clean lines and loads of light. A fully equipped business centre and conference facilities are available. Faxes can be sent from reception and rooms have internet access. There’s a wine shop and wine bar. Staying here is a true Viennese experience.

This five-star hotel, founded in 1876, is one of the leading hotels of the world and home of the original Sacher Torte. All 152 rooms and suites have been very recently refurbished. Improvements include a fabulous spa and treatment centre, including a herbal sauna, an ice fountain and hot chocolate treatments. Wi-fi is only available on floors six and seven. Make sure you book a room on one of these if you need it. All other rooms have highspeed internet access.

Somewhat impersonal, but still excellent, very efficient and a popular choice with business travellers and celebrities. Very central, the hotel is superbly placed on the edge of Stadtpark, great for an early morning jog or evening stroll along the Danube. Fully accessible for disabled travellers. High-speed internet access in all rooms. The hotel can arrange secretarial assistance and other business services on request.

An excellent hotel with genuinely friendly and helpful staff, room service until 10pm and easy access to the many restaurants and bars of the 7th District. It’s close to the business areas, the U-Bahn and within walking distance of the 1st District. Good restaurant and bar. Non-smoking rooms are available on request. Thoroughly

You’ll need an expense account to stay here, but it’ll be worth every penny. A fairly new luxury hotel that has become the last word in style. Excellent conference facilities (available for hire) and all business amenities catered for on request. Your leisure time is equally well catered for at the spa. There are three rooms specially adapted for disabled guests. One note of caution: if you are allergic to animals, let them know at the time of booking, as pets are permitted to stay in some of the rooms. Make sure you try the Shambala restaurant and bar, pioneered by Michelin starred chef Michel Rostang, and sample some of the exotic dishes on the menu. The cocktails are also excellent.

If you’re looking for a bachelor apartment, this is the choice for you (you even have free access to an erotic TV channel). The one problem with these deluxe apartments is that the owners speak little English. Each one is furnished in the style of a decadent large hotel, without the annoyance of being in one. Features might include an open fire or a large marble statue in your bathroom! Exercise equipment is available to use in your apartment.

A five-star hotel in the heart of imperial Vienna and a member of the Relais & Chateaux group. A 19th century palace, this impressive and beautiful hotel will provide a truly sumptuous experience—at a price. The gourmet restaurant has an extensive wine list and there’s a luxurious roof top spa, beautiful grounds and nine function rooms available for hire.

These opulent apartments—studios, one-bedroom or two-bedroom—will really make you feel like you’re in 19th century Vienna. Furnished in a heavy Italianate style, they may not be to everyone’s taste, but their location and facilities—including your own kitchen and wi-fi—are faultless.

This hotel only opened in February 2005, and must be checked out. Its fully equipped fitness centre offers spa treatments and the restaurant Sapori serves gourmet Italian food. The hotel bar is fast becoming one of Vienna’s hotspots. The interior design was inspired by Viennese art deco and is eminently pleasing. Definitely one to try.

A small, hand-picked choice with fantastic breakfast. This is ideal for travellers with a car as there’s ample parking outside, plus the nearest U-Bahn station is just two minutes’ walk away. A quiet, pretty part of Vienna close to the Danube, with the centre of the 1st District just nine minutes away by U-Bahn. The rooms are spacious with internet access and satellite TV, as well as a secluded garden and large porch. Hip and well decorated, this is a real find starting at €75 a night.
