By far Rotterdam’s best hotel, it’s also permanently full – so be sure to book ahead. Originally the headquarters of the Holland-America cruise line, the interiors could be described as modern maritime meets art nouveau. Try and get one of the Tower suites with spectacular views of the Nieuwe Maas river, across which the hotel’s private launch ferries its guests. And even if you don’t stay here, it’s worth visiting for a coffee or slap-up meal in the hotel restaurant.
