The husband and wife team of Agata and Romeo have become famous in Rome for their creative Italian cuisine and the stylish turn-of-the-century setting of their restaurant. The menu is seasonal but Agata’s millefeuille is always a good bet for dessert. Wash your meal down with one of the 2,800 wines on offer and relax in the candle-lit ambience.

 

Perfect for a light lunch, Café Café serves up an interesting array of salads, tortes and open sandwiches. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal and there is normally a selection of foreign newspapers to peruse. The crostini (toasted bread platters) are delicious and the desserts are appealing but tantalisingly small. Unusually for Italy they have a non-smoking policy indoors, making this one of the few smoke-free restaurants in Rome.

 

Checchino claims to be the oldest surviving restaurant in Rome. Its menu refl ects the origin of the restaurant as a cookhouse to which workers at the nearby abattoir would bring the offal they received as part payment to be prepared. Hence you can sample animelle (tripe) and guancelle (pig cheek) if you are feeling brave.

 

If you visit Da Baffetto, a no-frills local institution two-minutes’ walk from Navona, be prepared to wait in line as tables cannot be booked. When you are seated, expect to share your table with other diners and you may even be asked to help lay the paper table cloths! The reason you might go through all this is to sample what many believe to be Rome’s finest pizzas, available in super-size for the ravenously hungry. The capricciosa (artichoke, egg and prosciutto on a wafer-thin pizza base) is a particular favourite.

 

Make sure you smile sweetly at proprietor Felice Trivelloni when you ask for a table as he reserves the right to refuse a table to anyone he doesn’t like the look of! If you are one of the select few to make it past this strict selection procedure then you will enjoy a feast of Roman cooking at reasonable prices, all washed down with a glass of the local wine, Castelli Romani. The straccetti (strips of beef) come highly recommended.
