Reykjavík / Nightlife / Bar / Club

This trendy and stylish bistro-bar is decorated like a big sitting room, with a giant leather sofa and huge lampshades on the ceiling. The atmosphere is surprisingly welcoming. For early evening and daytime visitors, the food is also very good.

Popular with young expatriates and exchange students, Cultura is an eclectic café by day and a buzzing dancefloor by night. It’s mostly an under thirties crowd, and this is the place to go for slightly more unusual music—salsa nights are very busy.

Depending on the time of day, Kaffi Sólon is either a café, bistro, bar or nightclub. Late at night, the upstairs dancefloor is packed with trendy young people getting down to the latest tunes, while downstairs remains for those who want to sit and chat—if you can get a table.

Aside from the requisite Irish watering holes, this is the closest thing Iceland has to an old-fashioned pub. Usually a good bet for finding a place to sit and talk later in the evening. The ages and crowd are mixed and the beer selection is second to none.

Small, dark and smoky, Ölstofan is popular with an over-thirties crowd, mostly from Reykjavík’s artistic community. Often a good choice when there are queues at other places, but there’s no dancing here.
