Five years after moving from Oberkampf to République, this noisy, vividly coloured Brazilian joint still packs in the crowds with its potent cocktails and hearty Brazilian food. This is a place to let your hair down and join the others dancing on the tables, as DJs keep the gringos going into the early hours.

The service is dire at this Parisian institution, as the sultry model waitresses are far more interested in being discovered than delivering your expensive gin and tonic. But the ever-glamorous Costes is highly entertaining. Settle back on the profusion of over-stuffed cushions and prepare to star gaze. No one will notice you, most likely, so prepare to be ignored.

With its long mahogany bar, bookshelves, deep leather chairs and large picture windows overlooking the Louvre, this has to be one of the most civilised places in town for a cocktail (martinis are a speciality – you can even choose the brand of gin or vodka). The haunt of a smart international crowd, it’s also a good place for lunch, Sunday brunch or afternoon tea.

The classy Mezzanine bar above Conran’s designer brasserie Alcazar has kept its cool with mood lighting and velvet banquettes. Its relaxed lounge music and funk programming have made it the haunt of a trendy yet eclectic set for after-work drinks and later. On 'D-stress’ nights you can even wind down with a massage.

Blow your expense account on one of the fantastic cocktails invented by barman Colin Field at this discreet, sophisticated bar in the hotel supposedly 'liberated’ by Big Ern himself in 1944. The Hemingway Bar is a discreet venue, ideal for those who want to enjoy a cigar while listening to piano classics.
