Global ingredients cooked in the French style is chef Torbjorn Mollerop’s trademark. Think the creamiest lobster soup, crisp fried char with parmesan polenta, shiitake mushrooms with glazed beetroots and sweet cherry soup. The Hotel Continental’s Michelin-starred restaurant has all the crisp comforts you expect from the hotel, plus Oslo’s usual smart but informal atmosphere. Last orders 11pm.

 

Two Michelin stars don’t lie: this is one of Scandinavia’s best restaurants. Chef Eyvind Hellstrøm cooks up contemporary Norwegian banquets—carpaccio of scallops in oyster sauce, sole steamed in seaweed—with a French influence. Three, five and seven-course menus change daily. The wine cellar is excellent. Creamy mustard walls with organic art and crisp white linens set a modern, informal tone. Last orders 10pm.

 

Tucked into the first floor of the 17th-century Rådhus is Oslo’s oldest restaurant, which celebrated its 360th birthday in 2001. The passing centuries haven’t altered the baronial rooms with their dark panelled walls, and most of the dishes remain unchanged as well. Try reindeer with lingonberry sauce or fresh pike or perch with boiled potatoes. The time-warp atmosphere will delight some and bore others, but the lunchtime array of open sandwiches is unsurpassed in the city. Last orders at 1am.

 

This tiny 140-year-old restaurant opposite the Museum of Contemporary Art has a dinky, folksy exterior. A literati haunt in the past, its traditional seasonal seafood and game dishes—look for pinnekjøtt (meat sticks) in the Christmas season—are similarly unchanged. A charming cobbled square offers alfresco dining in the summer. Last orders 1am.

 

Endorsed by Michelin and royalty—King Harald and Queen Sonya have dined here—Feinschmecker is one of Oslo’s best eating experiences. It may have eschewed minimalism for an 'upmarket living room’ look, with antique furniture and cosy paint shades, but the menu—particularly the spectacular herb-crusted and glazed Norwegian lamb—is considerably grander than most home cooking.
