After successful stopovers in Provence and London (at Damien Hirst’s Pharmacy restaurant), this is Norwegian-Korean TV chef Sonja Lee’s third restaurant. She triumphs again with a buzzy atmosphere and a daily changing menu of authentic dishes like ricotta ravioli with crispy Parma ham and Alain Ducasse-inspired veal with macaroni gratin. The modern, terracottacoloured interior attracts a grown-up jet set who appreciate smooth service and traditional but entertaining dining. Last orders 10.30pm.

Last orders: 10.30 Smart casual Terje Ness won a Michelin star for this Spanish-style restaurant with high-spirited dishes like turbot with lentils, capers and truffles and his 'chocolate oro’ (chocolate mousse with passionfruit topped with gold leaf). Now that the celebrity chef has departed, the pressure is on successor Mats Larssan to maintain standards. An alternative is the Oro-owned tapas bar next door, where a hugely hip crowd juggle mobiles and anchovy olives while they people watch.

This clean-cut, sophisticated restaurant and bakery is where the royal family comes every day to pick up Oslo’s most mouthwatering cakes, artistically created by the staff of founder Pascal Dupuy, a member of the prestigious Academie Culinaire de France. The airy, modern space, which is the Royal Castle’s closest neighbour, is always crowded with an mix of diplomats, artists and young mothers with babies (don’t be put off by the latter, it is a Norwegian tradition to take newborns everywhere).
