Oslo / Dining

Sushi is popular with fish-fanatical Norwegians. Elegant flower arrangements in three large windows decorate the entrance of this modern, minimalist sushi bar, arguably the city’s finest. Two sushi chefs 'perform’ at the long teak bar, rolling local king crab, shrimps and scallops as well as distinctly Norwegian whale sushi and kveit fett (halibut fat chopped with spring onions and rolled like uni sushi). A more leisurely meal featuring mains such as grilled eel with teriyaki sauce is available in a separate dining room. Last orders 10.15pm.

Global ingredients cooked in the French style is chef Torbjorn Mollerop’s trademark. Think the creamiest lobster soup, crisp fried char with parmesan polenta, shiitake mushrooms with glazed beetroots and sweet cherry soup. The Hotel Continental’s Michelin-starred restaurant has all the crisp comforts you expect from the hotel, plus Oslo’s usual smart but informal atmosphere. Last orders 11pm.

Two Michelin stars don’t lie: this is one of Scandinavia’s best restaurants. Chef Eyvind Hellstrøm cooks up contemporary Norwegian banquets—carpaccio of scallops in oyster sauce, sole steamed in seaweed—with a French influence. Three, five and seven-course menus change daily. The wine cellar is excellent. Creamy mustard walls with organic art and crisp white linens set a modern, informal tone. Last orders 10pm.

Grungy Grønland has the most authentic Asian restaurants, but for more savoury surroundings, this West End pan-Asian restaurant is just the ticket. The Viet[name]se owners do a splendid banh tom ho tay (shrimp and sweet potato pancakes), but Thai curries and Japanese dishes like salmon teriyaki are also on offer. The rather lurid colour scheme— pink and orange walls and bright graphic prints—completes the confident fusion. Last orders 10pm.

This converted electricity plant has been an enormous success since it opened four years ago. The posh neighbourhood, imposing entrance and high ceiling give the impression of a mansion belonging to a family of rich, eccentric and yet surprisingly hospitable grandees. Try homemade pizzas with Gorgonzola and rocket in the café, or join the more upscale but still relaxed atmosphere in the brasserie where the game Bourguignonne, the fish hotpot and the lamb shank are famously excellent. Last orders 10.30pm.
