Norway’s tallest building (it has 34 storeys) is the first choice for many business travellers. Its glass exterior, flashing blue in the Arctic sun, has been a landmark since it first opened in 1980 to a rather mixed reception. And truthfully, its enormous interior can seem impersonal. However, its position close to Oslo S is superb and the facilities are all you’d expect, including poolside saunas. Bedrooms are undergoing renovations— the superior rooms offer high-tech super-modernity, with original artworks and enough glitz to please celebrity clients ranging from Bill Clinton to Westlife.

Congenially located among the bars and cafés of Rosenkrantz gate, this pleasantly functional business hotel offers a good location and the reliability of the Rica chain. Currently being refurbished, bedrooms have a homely quality with inoffensive patterned fabrics and soft blue and yellow colours. The restaurant (lunch only) has an easy-going atmosphere, although you may disagree with local opinion that it has a Spanish air. However, with the fish restaurants of Aker Brygge a short stroll away, there’s little reason to linger. Staff are efficient and affable.
