Nice / Dining / French

A theatre in the 1930’s this lovely little Parisian brasserie retains its theatrical roots and caters for a late evening crowd. The Art Deco décor is extravagant with plush velvet seats, thick hanging curtains, large mirrors and soft spotlights. The menu is equally dramatic with a fine fare of fois gras, smoked herring and grilled steak – and of course plenty of champagne. A piano plays softly in the background and the warm and artistic atmosphere lends itself to the after theatre crowd. Open til midnight weekdays and later on Friday and Saturday this is a top spot to sup in Nice.

Possibly the hippest of Nice’s restaurants, L’Avenue will make diners from New York and London feel pretty much at home. At the end of a long corridor, in a sober setting of beige, black, brown and burgundy, artistically presented dishes of 'contemporary southern’ inspiration are served with avant garde music in the background. The place of the moment to see and be seen.

An institution in its time near the Opera House and Cours Saleya market, La Petite Maison welcomes businessmen, artists, tourists, musicians and celebrities with the same off-hand hospitality in a refined but animated atmosphere. The food is excellent and everyone is delighted to have actually got a table. The menu features a tempting parade of stuffed Provencal vegetables, fresh shrimp salad, calamari, risotto, scrambled eggs with truffles and grilled sea bass with olive oil and artichokes. And you wouldn’t look too out of place dining solo here either.

No phone or cheques or credit cards for this tiny bistro near the Opera House, and yet a loyal clientele of locals and foreign tourists squeeze onto 24 uncomfortable stools in order to sample the market-fresh seasonal fare in purest Nicois tradition. Owner and chef Dominique Le Stanc, who abandoned the Negresco eight years ago, serves stuffed vegetables, onion tart, tripe, pasta with pistou, black pudding with apple sauce and stockfish (on Fridays). Closed on weekends.
