One of the country’s fi rst designer café-bars, Dry has been a home from home for the city’s glitterati for over a decade. Started by the people behind Factory Records, it remains a hangout for Manchester’s hip, happening and beautiful people. The entertainment is varied, from live band nights to stomping old-school house DJs—so call ahead to fi nd out what’s on. It also serves a great selection of light snacks.

 

A designer café-bar of the highest calibre, Loaf was the first bar to [open] in the now fashionable docks area. The drinks are reasonably priced, as is the fantastically hearty British fare on offer. The crowd here know how to put on the glitz and, whatever the weather, expect the girls to be dressed as if it was a balmy summer evening.

 

Laidback, unpretentious and jolly, Night and Day is a prime example of life in the Northern Quarter. Latin-infused sounds, eclectic food and a selection of live music make it the perfect place to kick back, relax and, most of all, people-watch, as its ever-shifting clientele gets down to the funky v

 

This much-loved 18th-century pub was moved following the Arndale Centre bombing in 1996, but no amount of shifting can change its jovial atmosphere. Tolkienesque, it has an old-world charm and it serves a great selection of ales, pies and the kind of fare you’d expect in an 18th-century hostelry.

 

Outrageous staff and a fun-loving crowd make Velvet a great place for a late-night drink or meal. Opulent but dimly lit, you’ll be able to hear the basement bar way before you see it. The cocktails are excellent, as is the fusion food. Just be sure to enter with an [open] mind as proceedings here can get quite wild.
