Decorated like a Christmas tree with sparkling lights all year round, the Britannia is one of Manchester’s largest and most established hotels. Reasonably priced, it attracts a cross-section of people drawn by its reputation as much as by its central location. The interior of the hotel is something of a disappointment, having seen better days, but it’s certainly good value for money and in an ideal location from which to explore the city.

Overlooking Manchester’s redesigned Piccadilly Gardens area, this hotel is perfect for the budget conscious. While luxury isn’t the order of the day, rooms are a good size, beds large and bathrooms modern and fresh. Service is also good here and its location couldn’t be better for exploring Manchester’s thriving Northern Quarter.

Vast, Victorian and something of an institution in Manchester, it’s nevertheless fair to say that The Midland has seen better days. While the imposing exterior is undoubtedly impressive, you get the feeling that not many modern improvements have been made to this stalwart. Rooms are small, lacking in personality and the bathrooms are in need of an overhaul. However, the hotel is very central and service is effi cient.
