Situated directly opposite Malmaison, the Alias is a very popular choice with younger executives and media types, who are attracted by its eccentric design. A waxwork fi gure stands in the window and the place is full of ’60s furniture and leftfi eld objets d’art. The rooms are a good size, and the staff are friendly and attentive

Manchester’s premier boutique hotel, Didsbury House excels at all levels. Situated in the heart of the city’s trendiest district, it has a grand vision while remaining small in size. Interiors are contemporary without being overdesigned, the beds are large and cosy, and the two bar areas comfortable and quite lavish. The food is also excellent and breakfast is served through the day, making weekend stays more relaxed.

The 20 rooms are kitted out to the same high standard, with Victorian dimensions complemented by cutting-edge design. Beds are extremely comfortable and the well-trained staff create a homely atmosphere that guarantees the establishment is always in high demand.

It may be hard to believe, but when the Malmaison Hotel opened just a few years ago it marked the dawn of a new age in the city’s accommodation. Some years on it’s still impressive. Situated just a short walk from Piccadilly Station, it’s pleasing both in design and on the pocket. The highlight has to be the 1930s-style bathrooms, which are unusually large. Service is friendly and attentive, its gentility in contrast to the rather stark area in which the hotel is located.

Located near Manchester Airport, Mottram Hall is part of the Devere group of hotels. A grand country residence, its approach and grounds are quite imposing. Inside, the interior is less so and is in need of an overhaul. However, rooms are comfortable and the golf course is one of the best in the region. Sports facilities, including a pool and gym, are also available, and the spa is the perfect place to relax after a flight.
