Istanbul has lots of cinemas showing the latest Western films with Turkish subtitles. Tickets are around YTL 5. The AFM Fitas is a large multiplex with 11 screens in the centre of town. AFM also have a multiplex at the Akmerkez shopping centre, which is convenient for up-towners (Tel: 0212 282 0505).

The city’s pre-eminent concert hall on Taksim Square hosts regular classical music recitals and concerts, ballet and opera. There’s also an art gallery on site.

This functioning tekke—or dervish lodge— hosts haunting spinning ceremonies performed by a troop of Mevlevi whirling dervishes which is a site that must be seen once in a lifetime. At other times you can look around a small on-site museum with various Mevlevi exhibits.

An upmarket jazz club that hosts top local jazz acts as well as the odd international star, like Natalie Cole. Expect to pay dearly for the privilege of grooving in the city’s top hotel but this is a great spot to entertain a client.
