Perched on a rooftop terrace high above Istiklal Caddesi, this new arrival has a breathtaking 360-degree view across the rooftops. The food lives up to the vista, with an eclectic international menu devised by owner and accomplished restaurateur Sasha. After dinner there is a good bar, so you don’t have to tear yourself away from the view.

Changa remains at the forefront of Istanbul’s restaurant scene with its super-hip interior tucked away in an art nouveau building near Taksim Square. The minimalist decor complements the Pacific Rim cuisine and the carefully considered menu created by Peter Gordon, chef at London’s Sugar Club. Main course offerings include wasabi and salmon tortellini with grilled porcini and creamed lemon grass sauce, while desserts like mille feuille of fresh figs or Turkish coffee ice-cream with biscotti and bitter almond liqueur ensure sweet lovers go home happy.

Occupying an exquisitely restored Ottoman police station, the Feriye has a fantastic waterside terrace, which is great for lunch or dinner in summer. Tables are laid out right beside the waves and, if you can take your eyes off the stunning views, the menu reads well, with a selection of carefully researched, authentic Ottoman dishes alongside more international fare. An excellent place to entertain a client.

In a narrow side street off Istiklal Caddesi, jars of colourful pickles catch your eye as you step into this Beyoglu institution, which has been around for more than 100 years. The fare is traditional Turkish and Ottoman and there are no menus. You choose from a huge selection of soups, stews, kebabs and roasted meats on display, then seat yourself in one of three dining rooms. Open lunchtime only, no alcohol is served.

This is an excellent meyhane on a whole street of similarly good places to wine and dine, behind the Cicek Pasaji in Beyoglu. A huge selection of meze are presented on large trays, followed by your choice of meat and fish. Choose a table by the street—best for soaking up the atmosphere—and many of the restaurants have rooftop terraces too.
