This small complex of 43 apartments on the northern edge of the New Town is just down the hill from George Street. The accommodation is not as opulently luxurious as some, but is up to a high standard and provides more than basic amenities with all the benefits of serviced accommodation.

If you need nothing more than a basic, cheap room in which to rest your head, then this Travelodge provides just the thing. There are TVs in the rooms and all have telephones with an external line. The basic bar-café does provide breakfast and evening meals during the week and is open until 11pm for residents. Otherwise, the very excellent café Plaisir du Chocolat on the High Street provides delicious continental-style breakfasts, and the vegetarian Banns Restaurant over the road is also thoroughly recommended.

The Robert Adam-designed façade hides a hotel that bids to be upmarket, but cannot quite reach the dizziest heights of its illustrious Princes Street’ neighbours. That said, this is still a sumptuous place to stay, where tradition and modern comfort are professionally brought together. Le Chambertin Restaurant has an excellent wine cellar to complement its formal dining, while the Carvers Restaurant is more casual. Ten of the rooms have full business facilities, and the hotel’s four main function suites can accommodate up to 200 people at conferences and meetings, with a further selection of smaller syndicate rooms available. Although the hotel does not have a business centre, it can offer secretarial services.

This converted office block is definitely not the epitome of style. But being situated between Waverley Station and the Royal Mile does make it a convenient place to stay for the Old Town. This is a no-frills affair, although it does offer five conference rooms and a business centre. The bar is cozy and comfortable enough for an after-business or pre-adventure drink.

Down by the new Holyrood Parliament, and opposite the Scotsman Newspaper’s premises, the Holyrood is a thoroughly modern hotel created with an eye for both the business and the diplomatic communities. Which means that besides the usual well-appointed rooms, there is a Club Floor where you can enjoy the services of your own private butler. A whole floor is also dedicated to a meeting and conference facility, housed in two separate rooms which can host up to 200 delegates. Guests have access to gym, swimming pool, sauna and steam room, and other facilities in the Vital health, fitness and beauty centre.
