This wonderfully designed restaurant from Mario di Biase offers daily menu specials. Here you’ll find more than just the usual duck breast, carpaccio or sole – take for example the octopus salad with celery, very unusual. Pasta and vegetables are prepared masterfully and many classic dishes stand out because of their perfect presentation. A brilliant wine menu rounds off an authentic-Italian eating experience.

Situated in a chic ‘altbau’ (old) building with large windows, Fischemanns serves Mediterranean cuisine with an Asian infl uence. The menu is dominated by fi sh and meat, but a daily menu of special offers lets you create your own three-course meal for around 22 euros. Trendy waiters and sleek interior design make this one of Cologne’s in-places to eat.

Perfectly located for passing business people or tourists on an excursion to the Dom, this is Cologne’s best-known brewery. Traditional food is served in a down-to-earth atmosphere, the drink is Kölsch and the noise is loud. The service here is original Cologne, which means they’ll be as direct as they can be. Don’t expect special treatment, but do be prepared to be talked into having yet another Kölsch.

In order to eat at Cologne’s most beloved Spanish restaurant make sure to book a table in advance, otherwise you could easily fi nd yourself cramped at a table in the front, or standing and waiting to be seated. All the classical dishes are available as tapas or ‘racion’. Paella, prawns, salads and a variety of hams are the main reason to eat in La Bodega. This place is open until 3am on weekends making it a regular for late-night snackers.

This is a tiny restaurant on a side street in Cologne’s Südstadt, where the ‘mum’ of the house cooks traditional Spanish cuisine. It’s said to be the best tapas in town and the all-family staff do their best to ensure the reputation remains intact. The place is so small it probably wouldn’t meet with British or American health and safety regulations, tables are cramped next to each other and you can’t avoid bumping into your neighbours when you try to get out of your seat. However, this adds to the cosy ambience of the place, and doesn’t detract from the fact that the food is truly excellent.
