Overlooking the waterfront at Cardiff Bay, Izakaya benefi ts from its prime location. There is a choice of ordinary tables or sunken tables with mats to sit on, and two bamboo-partitioned rooms. The picture menu is a great help if you’re not a sushi expert. As is often the case with sushi, portions are small for the price, but it’s good quality, and you’ll be thanked for your custom in Japanese.

Zushi was the fi rst conveyor-belt sushi restaurant to open in Wales, with a colour-coded menu and self-selection service. Diners can choose from a booth or sit at the counter and where the sushi chefs are at work. It’s a great place to people-watch. There is a good selection of very fresh sushi as well as hot dishes. Chicken teriyaki is great, as is the peppered tuna sashimi, not forgetting the white chocolate truffl e for dessert.
