Previously perceived as an under-par Hilton, the recently renovated Brussels City has nevertheless carved a niche for itself with its new-generation, 4-star luxury, offering an intimate, relaxing, young and dynamic hotel experience. The claim is “luxury with a human dimension”, and, whether you buy that or not, there’s no doubting the friendly atmosphere and personalised service. The brasserie L’Oliva is suitably chic, there are two meeting rooms and a health and relaxation centre with sauna, steam bath, solarium and fitness equipment. The EC and Brussels Expo are very close, and the North station (offering an airport express train) is only 300 metres away. Wooden floors add a touch of class to all the rooms, which have minibar, air conditioning and safe as standard.

The recently-renovated NH Atlanta is a pleasant, functional hotel with well-equipped rooms, Belgian, French and Italian cuisine on offer in its Brasserie Atlanta and an opportunity to sample some of its wide range of famous Belgian beers and whiskeys in the comfortable lobby lounge. A Health & Fitness centre with sauna and Turkish bath is available to guests free of charge, and there’s even an experienced team of coaches on hand to help you make the best use of the sporting and leisure facilities. Business needs are well catered for, too – six conference rooms can each hold up to 80 people.

The Best Western Chain’s occasionally poor reputation is pleasantly confounded by a stay in Woluwe. La Sodehotel, which is situated around 20 minutes from the city centre, is located in pleasant surroundings and has a boutique feel to its decor. The staff are pleasant, the rooms spacious and the bathrooms well-equipped. Add to this an English bar offering half-price Belgian Beers between 5pm and 7pm, and you have the makings of an ideal venue for a short stopover. The Leonard restaurant serves good French cuisine, and guests have a chance to work it off with free access to a gym located just five minutes around the corner.
