Belgian beer on tap (Leffe), muted wood panelling throughout, and a front terrace that can’t be beat for people watching in summer. Clientele tends to be diplomats and foreign entrepreneurs, but De Zwaan is increasingly popular with locals as well so make sure you pay it a visit.

 

When it was [open]ed 10 years ago, the Dubliner took Bratislava pub life to a new level, with its fireplace cheer and expat-only prices. Now the rest have moved on, leaving the Dubliner emptier and less dynamic but still a magnet for foreign tourists.

 

Gremium, a hostel/restaurant/bar complex, is one of the best places in the city to watch sports, with big screens making for easy viewing. Make sure to book a table, especially for big games, as the seating is hotly contested.

 

Time is elastic down here in this cellar eatery, this catacomb of low-ceilinged rooms, where unsated drinkers, off-duty cops and anyone else who has nowhere to go at 4am comes to see the night through. Sometimes the highlight of the evening, Frantiskani is the kind of place you’ll always find an interesting conversation, even if you don’t want one.

 

What started out as an innovative restaurant and pasta bar under chef Igor Cehy has become one of the surprise nightspots of the past year. Medusa’s great music, relaxed and jazzy atmosphere, sophisticated food and drinks menu and mature service have a lot to do with it.
