An aquapark with various indoor and outdoor heated pools and slides in the village of Senec, about 20 minutes drive from Bratislava. Regular buses run from the main station while a taxi can be arranged for about £10 from the city centre.

Lane rental costs about £10 per hour (less before 5pm). Bowling parties can get quite jolly, what with the in-house bar, and there are plenty of pubs in the mall to retire to after a gruelling session of beer and skittles.

Three new squash courts have [open]ed in an old-school fitness centre, offering cheap rentals and generally lots of room to manoeuvre. Free parking and five minutes’ walk from downtown Bratislava.

Live jazz every Thursday through Saturday in a downtown cellar pub. Conditions can get very hot and smoky, but that’s what jazz is all about. Get there before 8pm if you want a seat.

Sparx is the moniker of the renovated Mamut, formerly one of central Europe’s largest beer halls. The newfangled neon and sparkle hasn’t penetrated the subterranean billiards hall, now called the Admiral Club, where beer and cigarettes still hold sway.
