Bratislava / Dining

You might not expect to find a high-quality Italian restaurant in an office building, but Al Dente has many such surprises in store. Despite the streams of pedestrians, its summer patio is shielded by a stockade of planters and trees. The kitchen is equally as adept with pizza as with vitello alla piccata, and the comfortable wickerwork chairs and brickwork decor bear no trace of their administrative surroundings.

A new opening in the historic Tomas Bata building at the north end of the SNP Square, Alizé offers a fabulous summer terrace with a view of the Old Town, a menu featuring wild boar, hare and massive steaks, and fascinatingly moulded cutlery and kitchenware. The nouvelle cuisine presentation may leave the hungry unsated, but anyone out to impress dinner guests will score with this elegant choice.

Now in its third year, Au Café is the reincarnation of a coffee shop that stood in the same place in 1827. Situated against the backdrop of the huge Sad Janka Krala park on the south side of the Danube, Au Café has a posh-but-relaxed feel and, with its terrace, kids’ playground and stunning view of the Old Town, it can’t be beat on a sunny day. Its authentic Italian menu attracts many business and political regulars.

No expense was spared in renovating the former premises of the Le Monde restaurant and introducing a new [name] to high-end dining in Bratislava. The muted lighting is a bit more modern than the city is accustomed to, but the foie gras and roast venison will please even the most exacting traditionalist.

Bratislava has few seafood restaurants, but you’d be unlikely to find any better than Caribic’s, even if the city were awash in fruits de mer. Co-founded by a native of the Dominican Republic, Caribic’s resembles a Caribbean seafood restaurant in both decor and its fresh fish menu. Sommeliers Otto Chrapciak and Miroslav Ondrus have assembled a superb wine list, the only non-Caribbean aspect of this riverside culinary catch.
