This Spanish-themed joint is proving very popular, with its tapas- and cavathemed menu and laid-back atmosphere, but purists may wonder how it can have no fino on the drinks list, or, for that matter, include sausage and mash in the choices. A small gripe for what is a lively and informal favourite.

The look of this place is intended to be Moroccan, and you can stretch out on big comfortable sofas and mattresses. In general, Barocca is a relaxed spot; a good place to unwind and not feel like you’re on show. Despite the obvious theme the food is not particularly North African, and nothing special—it’s just there to soak up the drink.

With Jools Holland as honorary musical director, this is one of the best live music venues in the city, with an eccelctic programme of singers and groups on most nights of the week. High quality music is accompanied by a surprisingly good menu, making this one of Birmingham’s most memorable nights out.
