Birmingham / Dining / French

With its candles, clean linen and vine trendrils hanging from the windows, the Bistro at the Hotel du Vin has a classy feel. The food is simple, although not rustic, French; have sauteed foie gras or a game terrine for starters and mains such as rump of lamb or fi llet of sole Véronique. The Bubble Lounge and Cellar Bar are also two popular venues, where the major players hang out and enjoy a fantastic selection of drinks and cigars. The Bubble Lounge is fl amboyantly decorated in the style of Venice’s Café Florin, while on the lower ground fl oor The Cellar Bar has an altogether different feel—here you’ll fi nd eccentric oil paintings and a tequila and rum list like no other.

Fabulous food from Glynn Purnell (exHibiscus) in comfortably stylish surroundings puts this new venture up with the best of Birmingham. Just a mile from the city centre, it offers respite from the hustle and bustle of the city and has a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Jessica’s is a real treat, with a fantastic value for money lunchtime menu.

Chef Didier Philipot cooks up some superb dishes at exemplary prices— £23.50 for three courses at dinner and £15.50 at lunch. The cooking is based on classical French dishes, but then given an often surprising twist. Friendly and cosy, and one of the best reasons to stroll down to the Jewellery Quarter after dark.
