The owners spent years perusing ancient texts and using scraps of information, and a few remaining bona fi de recipes, to reconstruct the cuisine of the ancient Greeks. They then set up this refreshingly original restaurant, where they serve such delicacies as fi sh in berry sauce or pork with honey. The emphasis is on authenticity, so you’ll only fi nd ingredients available in antiquity (i.e. no chips on the side) and no forks, while the waiters serve you in togas. There is a second Arheon Gefsis at Epidavrou 10, Mikrolimano (Tel: 210 4238617).

 

A vast array of beautifully-cooked, traditional Greek dishes from every corner of the country, some of them quite obscure, are paraded before the diners that opt for the restaurant’s set menu. Alternatively, you can order just the dishes that take your fancy. Kioupia also offers more than 80 different Greek wines. The restaurant is large, done up in a traditional Greek style and has a particularly attractive garden that is very pleasant in the summer.

 

This is one of the prettiest restaurants in the city, set in an elegant neoclassical townhouse that was once a hat shop. The decor is strictly classical but Pil Poul comes into its own in the summer, when it opens up the rooftop terrace with its amazing view of the Acropolis, Lycabettus and the Old Observatory. In charge of the kitchen is chef Robert Servatka, who produces refined dishes influenced by French and Mediterranean cuisine.

 

The [name] in Greek means ‘Horizons of Lycabettus’ and it’s about as literal as it could be. The restaurant is perched right on the summit of Lycabettus Hill above Kolonaki, with breathtaking views of the city that stretch right up to the far horizons beyond Piraeus and Faliro. At the helm is chef Yiannis Geldis, who places emphasis on seafood but also offers some interesting dishes for meat lovers.

 

If not the best, Spondi is definitely among the top three restaurants in the country. Another recipient of the rare Greek Michelin stars, it has also been steadily voted the best Athens restaurant by local critics and guides. The menu is supervised by a well-known French chef and includes some of the most imaginative dishes on offer in Athens, the desserts are divine and the wine list includes some 1,000 choices.
