The owners spent years perusing ancient texts and using scraps of information, and a few remaining bona fi de recipes, to reconstruct the cuisine of the ancient Greeks. They then set up this refreshingly original restaurant, where they serve such delicacies as fi sh in berry sauce or pork with honey. The emphasis is on authenticity, so you’ll only fi nd ingredients available in antiquity (i.e. no chips on the side) and no forks, while the waiters serve you in togas. There is a second Arheon Gefsis at Epidavrou 10, Mikrolimano (Tel: 210 4238617).

 

Humble pasta is taken to new heights in this smart restaurant with its high-quality service and friendly staff. Needless to say, the pasta is invariably al dente and the sauces are light and balanced— no heavy-handed creations doused in cream—and there is an interesting selection of meat and seafood dishes for the main course. A second Casa di Pasta operates during the summer at Apollonos & Litous 2, Vouliagmeni (Tel: 210 896 4112).

 

Far East is actually a smart mini-chain of three restaurants serving a variety of dishes from several Asian countries. The other two restaurants in the chain are at Diligianni 54, Kifissia (Tel: 210 623 3140) and Lazaraki & Pandoras in Glyfada (Tel: 210 894 0500). All three share high gastronomic standards in the kitchen and high-class aesthetics that combine western and Asian elements.

 

The trip out to Vouliagmeni, well beyond the outskirts of Athens along the coast road, is defi nitely an excursion, but a worthwhile one. You’ll fi nd incredible views of the seaside, and the very freshest of fi sh. The decor is luxurious, with a predominantly marine theme, and there is gentle piano music in the background.

 

This restaurant’s ultra-modern, mini-malist setting offers some of the best Japanese food to be found in Athens. Apart from the excellent sushi and sashimi, it’s worth trying some dishes on the special menu set aside chiefly for Japanese customers. These include the thin, crispy dumplings and noodles with shrimp and udon.
