If you are in Amsterdam in the summer, this is the pub to visit. The interior is pure 17th century and loaded with atmosphere, although a bit on the small side (smalle is Dutch for narrow). Fortunately, the pub is located on a small canal and has erected not only a terrace but also a dock, so that customers can arrive by boat. It is unlikely you will find a much more picturesque pub location anywhere in the city.

What de Wildeman is for beer, de Still is for whiskey. It has over 150, mostly of the single-malt variety. The curious are offered 'rounds’ of different whiskeys from the same area to compare the different distilleries.

Located atop the posh Hotel Okura, this lounge offers an almost unparalleled view of the city, the bar is secondary. Needless to say, all this comes at a price. But you’d be hard pressed to find a more impressive place to bring a client.

This is a restaurant/café plus tasting room for A v Wees, one of the two remaining jenever distilleries in Amsterdam. If you haven’t sampled jenevers, which are vaguely related to gin, you won’t want to miss this opportunity. The Admiraal is located on a canal and retains the furnishings of long ago. In nice weather, you can sit outside along the canal.

Simply stated, this the best beer pub in Amsterdam. It includes a smoke-free room and there’s no background music—the only form of entertainment is a rack of newspapers. There are regularly 17 or more beers on draught, often one or two real ales as well, plus some 200 bottles strong on Belgian, Dutch and growing German selections. Conveniently located smack in the centre of the city.
