Amsterdam / Nightlife

A former 17th-century frescoed chapel makes the historic if unlikely setting for one of Amsterdam’s most popular clubs. Music from the 60s to the 90s attracts a mixed crowd. On Timezone club nights, funk, soul and New York disco reign.

Retro club offering soul and funk from the 60s and 70s and drawing an older crowd. Don’t bother turning up before 3am.

[open]ing times vary Anything goes A venue for the more mature, if not in age, at least in taste. The music tends to be jazz, Cuban/salsa or world music. There is also a restaurant/café. Badcuyp likes to bill itself as the “music centre of the Pipe”, and they could be right.

If you are in Amsterdam in the summer, this is the pub to visit. The interior is pure 17th century and loaded with atmosphere, although a bit on the small side (smalle is Dutch for narrow). Fortunately, the pub is located on a small canal and has erected not only a terrace but also a dock, so that customers can arrive by boat. It is unlikely you will find a much more picturesque pub location anywhere in the city.

What de Wildeman is for beer, de Still is for whiskey. It has over 150, mostly of the single-malt variety. The curious are offered 'rounds’ of different whiskeys from the same area to compare the different distilleries.
