The centre for classical music in the Netherlands. The building itself was completed in the 19th century and is reputed to have outstanding acoustics. The auditorium is designed in such a way that there are seats both in front of and behind the orchestra. In effect, this virtually guarantees that there are no bad seats in the house.

Popularly known as the Stopera (as in 'stop the opera’) because at the time of the area’s redevelopment in the 70s many old houses were torn down to make way for the new opera house and community centre. The musical offerings include the Dutch National Opera and the National Ballet company. The building is on the banks of the Amstel river and, in warm weather, offers a café terrace outside. The accoustics are excellent, as are the programmes.
