The home of the Amsterdam Ajax football team, the Arena stadium stands on the outskirts of the city, but is easily reachable via underground (15-20 from central station). It is recommended to go directly from the station to the stadium and vice versa, especially after dark,.

A comedy club/restaurant run by some American expats. Although the performances are in English, it does help to know some Dutch culture to appreciate all the humour. The performers are big on improvisation and you may well be called on stage to act like a chicken.

The centre for classical music in the Netherlands. The building itself was completed in the 19th century and is reputed to have outstanding acoustics. The auditorium is designed in such a way that there are seats both in front of and behind the orchestra. In effect, this virtually guarantees that there are no bad seats in the house.

Popularly known as the Stopera (as in 'stop the opera’) because at the time of the area’s redevelopment in the 70s many old houses were torn down to make way for the new opera house and community centre. The musical offerings include the Dutch National Opera and the National Ballet company. The building is on the banks of the Amstel river and, in warm weather, offers a café terrace outside. The accoustics are excellent, as are the programmes.

Centrally located, the casino can offer an exciting diversion and, in the event that things don’t work out as well as you expected, the many cafés of the Leidseplein are close at hand and can provide at least a good stiff drink.
